Wales Millennium Centre

In the heart of Cardiff, the Wales Millennium Heritage Centre underwent a remarkable transformation, thanks to a collaboration between LEDFlex, Architects Viewport Studios, and lighting designer Desmond O’Donovan from DHA Designs. Together, they recognized the need to revitalise the Front of House spaces, the Foyer, and Cabaret, to make them more inviting and accessible to the public in response to the evolving needs of the local community.

Working closely with DHA Designs and Viewport Studios, LEDFlex brought its expertise to create a bespoke lighting scheme that would infuse warmth and consistency into these dedicated spaces. The Foyer, previously dimly lit and dreary with harsh materials, underwent a stunning metamorphosis. The key objective was to introduce ample lighting without compromising the aesthetics of the space. The solution was found in LEDFlex's High Lumen Ultimo Neon 16, which now softly and warmly illuminates the Foyer, discreetly integrated along the room's edges, under the bar's vertical face, and in the ceiling details. The interior is further modernised using natural finishes like oak panelling and LEDFlex's high efficient Eco Flex and ultra slim Nano Flex, blending seamlessly into the bar joinery construction. Moreover, rich wool mix fabrics elevate the look, and a neutral flooring choice enables soft, diffused, and reflected lighting.

In the Cabaret, LEDFlex’s 4mm wide Nano Flex is seamlessly integrated into the shelving and bar front, creating a streamlined and inviting ambiance. Geometric triangle accents on the ceiling further add drama and dynamism to the space, designed with LEDFlex's custom double width Rigid RGBW Pixel PCBs in custom black profiles. Meanwhile, the Ultra Bright RGBW 60 provides a captivating cove lighting effect around the room.

One standout feature in the Cabaret is the oversized triangle structure above the dance floor, custom designed using LEDFlex’s triple width RGBW Pixel Flex in a custom black profile connected to Digidot C4 Extended Drivers. This feature allows guests to dance the night away while enjoying captivating visual displays throughout the pre-show, main event, and post-show production.

This transformative renovation, combined with the innovative lighting design, has turned the Wales Millennium Centre into an exemplary showcase venue. It now stands as a hub for a variety of cultural events that celebrate the diversity of the local Welsh community. The modernised spaces not only showcase Welsh stories and talent to international audiences but also serve as a vibrant lifeline for the Welsh creative scene.
