The Project

Set within the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of AlUla, The Chedi Hegra is shaped by archaeological continuity rather than architectural imposition. The boutique resort is composed of retained railway structures, Nabataean stonework, and historic circulation routes, with the site’s existing fabric informing every contemporary intervention.

From the outset, lighting was conceived as an architectural instrument rather than a visual statement. In close collaboration with Nulty+, LEDFlex delivered a fully customised interior and exterior linear lighting scheme designed to define thresholds, reveal material transitions, and reinforce the project’s restrained architectural language.

The guest journey begins at reception, where light establishes the project’s tonal and spatial baseline. Ultimo Neon 16 is concealed within architectural coves, forming a continuous, glare-controlled line that articulates the full height of the ceiling volume. With the source visually absent, reflected light defines scale and proportion without introducing visual clutter.

This transition continues into Prima Classe, the restaurant housed within the former Hegra train station. A restored locomotive and retained railway tracks define the space, with lighting reinforcing this linear narrative. Lumen Line from LEDFlex’s Flexi range is discreetly integrated behind seating and along the bar, delivering high-CRI illumination tailored to hospitality environments.

Beneath the floor plane, Ultimo Neon 10 traces the historic tracks, subtly articulating former maintenance zones and offering a quiet nod to the site’s railway heritage. Externally, a linear pergola above the former train tracks connects guest rooms within repurposed site buildings. Here, Rigid Optico 40 delivers controlled linear illumination, acting as a subtle wayfinding element while maintaining low visual impact within the sensitive landscape.

Within the guest rooms, the original architectural character is preserved through a strategy of minimal intervention. Arched thresholds are softly articulated using Ultimo Neon 10 SV at 2700K, while joinery and shelving are illuminated using LEDFlex’s Joinery Range solutions. Delivered as a coordinated plug-and-play system, the lighting ensures precision, consistency, and clean integration across the uniquely configured rooms.

Throughout The Chedi Hegra, lighting remains deliberately secondary to architecture. Each decision responds to the cultural, environmental, and historical significance of the site, underpinned by technical rigour and control. The result is a disciplined, low-impact lighting scheme that demonstrates how contemporary linear systems can coexist with heritage at scale, not through visibility, but through integration, restraint, and intent.
